Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organization (T&D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s5 million customer accounts.
About Grid Technology Integration
In SCE’s 2018 General Rate Case, we proposed our first ever Grid Modernization program comprised of various grid technologies, software tools, and a telecommunications infrastructure overhaul aimed at enhancing the capabilities of our existing grid to significantly improve grid reliability while preparing the grid for a future with high DER penetration in the process. Because of the interdependencies between all of the subparts of the grid modernization program, the success of the program as a whole is dependent on many of the proposed solutions being implemented simultaneously and at times within a short timeline such that benefits from deployment can be demonstrated in time for the 2021 GRC cycle. While previous projects bear similarities to individual components of the grid modernization program and have been implemented successfully in the past, the holistic approach required by the grid modernization program outlined in the GRC requires a dedicated group to oversee its implementation over the next decade and beyond.
Grid Technology Integration (GTI), an organization within Grid Modernization, is focused on facilitating the transition of piloted grid technologies into the deployment stage by ensuring timely development & delivery of supporting components. Our goal is to ensure new grid technologies are in a mature state including the supporting business processes and documentation prior to commencing deployment activities such that they will support the capability enhancements necessary for the grid of the future.
New grid technologies that require integration between hardware, software, and telecomm components can be especially challenging to implement. The Grid Technology Integration Engineer would be responsible for leading the development & transition efforts to align with Grid Modernization objectives, and integrate new technology into planning & operations including line sensors, automated switches, automation schemes or algorithms, etc.
In addition to efforts on transitioning new grid technologies to deployment, this position will also closely work with IT business partners in executing an optimal deployment strategy for wired & wireless technologies as part of our telecomm infrastructure overhaul and expansion. They will also provide engineering support & GTI subject matter expertise by working closely with project teams responsible for implementing new operational software tools such as an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), and others.
Articulate technical topics in general terms to non-technical audiences
Present to various audiences throughout T&D on Grid Modernization and grid technologies
Lead & manage implementation team(s) for various grid technologies
Cross collaboration between stakeholders and subject matter experts on the development & transition efforts to align new distribution automation equipment with Grid Modernization objectives and facilitate ease of integration into planning & operations
Developing an optimal deployment strategy for substation technologies that aligns with Grid Modernization objectives
Cross collaboration between stakeholders and subject matter experts on the development & transition efforts to align new Subtransmission & Transmission technology with Grid Modernization objectives and facilitate ease of integration into planning & operations
Developing an optimal deployment strategy for wired & wireless technologies that supports all functional needs for new grid technologies
Develop technology white papers for usage on company portal and externally
Provide subject matter expertise in development, evaluation, and implementation of Operational tools including ADMS, DERMS, etc.
Develop and Maintain Work Stream Documentation such as vision & purpose, deployment strategy, execution roadmap, business case, etc.
Provide engineering support on key implementation activities
Advise on development of training material for new grid technology
Evaluate merit of new grid technology solutions for implementation at SCE
Develop cost forecasts & obtain funding approvals when necessary
Reviewing business documents (standards, bulletins, communication announcements)
Engage technology vendors by evaluating business proposals
Work with supply chain for procurement needs
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
Five years or more of overall engineering experience
Two years of experience or moreproject managing multiple parallel initiatives that involves diverse set of stakeholders
Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Emphasis
Understanding and experience with distribution and substation automation
Working knowledge and experience with distribution system operations
Working knowledge of available grid data both recorded and real time
Understanding and experience with distribution and subtransmission system planning
Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Will be required to travel to local Edison facilities on a regular basis
Candidates may be asked to provide writing samples or presentation samples
